Unit Specification

Information Visualisation and Graph Drawing aim to make good pictures of abstract information, such as stock prices, family trees, and software design diagrams. Well designed pictures can convey this information rapidly and effectively. The research challenge for Information Visualisation and Graph Drawing is to design and implement new algorithms that produce such pictures. Applications include visualisation of bioinformatics, social network, software visualisation and network visualisation. This unit will provide basic concepts, techniques and fundamental algorithms to achieve good visualisation of abstract information. Further, it will also provide opportunities for academic research and developing new methods for information visualisation.

Assumed Knowledge

It is assumed that students will have basic knowledge of data structures, algorithms and programming skills.

Assessment Schedule

Week 4 Data Set Release: Movie Database.
There are two datasets availabe online: http://www.ul.ie/gd2005/dataset.html and http://eagereyes.org/InfoVisContest2007Data.html. You can choose one or use both.
Week 9 Report 1 and presentation (20%) - contents should include understanding of the data set, basic approach and idea, related/previous work, implementation plan and references.
  • A rough marking scheme will include originality (20%), understanding and approaches (20%), literature review (20%), planning (20%) and presentation (20%).
  • A presentation of 15 minutes is expected from each team during the lecture.
  • Page limit is at least 5 pages (but not more than 10 pages) of single column text in 11-point font size.
Week 11 Research paper prensentation (20%)

No formal marking scheme for this assignment.

Information to help you prepare the presentation:
1. You will need to present and explain about the paper including problem definition, previous work
and main results obtained, main methods and techniques, and experimental results. Theses are basd on the paper.
2. Then you will need some evaluation on the paper how to improve it or what's the advantage and disadvantage of the paper or future work etc. These are based on your evaluation and comments.
Week 13 Marking scheme for final assignment (60% of overall mark)

1. final report: 80%
2. final presentation: 20%

1. final report

The final report should contain your initial analysis of the problem and literature review (expanded from Report 1 as necessary) (10%), a detailed explanation of how you approached the problem (20%), some
examples of the results of your visualisation approach (20%), a discussion of what insight you gained into the data using your visualisation approach (20%), discussion of any problems you faced during the development of the project (10%).

Marks may be weighted by the difficulty of your attempted approach (did you just use existing tools, or did you implement some aspects yourselves), quality of analysis and insight, and the overall quality of presentation in your report.

Reports are limited to 15 pages, single column text in 10-point font, including figures and references.

2. final presentation

The final presentation summarises the solution described in your report, highlighting any significant/novel features, and presents the results of your analysis of the data.

The presentation should be built around a set of slides (PowerPoint or PDF preferred). Where possible, a live demonstration of your visualisation "system" should be given - otherwise screenshots with appropriate
explanation are acceptable (and should be kept as a backup in case the live demonstration encounters problems).

The presentation should take around 20 minutes and will be followed by a (short) question and answer session.

Marks are assigned for how well you explain your solution and results (40%), the quality of your slides (25%), the quality of your verbal presentation (25%), and how well you handle the question and answer
session (10%).

Note that your report, slides and any demonstration software should be submitted electronically before the presentation, to the lecturer in charge.
