William is originally from Taipei, Taiwan. He completed his elementary and junior high schools there. In July 1996, he went to the United States (Corvallis, Oregon) for high school, where he graduated with an Outstanding Senior Award.
After spending four years of high school in the United States, William started a bachelor degree in Computer Science at University of Waikato, New Zealand in July 2000. At the end of 2002, he was offered a departmental scholarship for an Honours degree in year 2003, for which he worked on a project titled "Software for the Smart Home" with Professor Mark Apperley and Bill Rogers. Later in the year, he was conferred the Best Presentation Award in the annual Honours Conference where the CompSci Honours students presented. He graduated with the First-class Honours.
Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he decided to go for a personal dream: fly. He got a restricted Private Pilot Licence on 14 August 2004, after about ten months of training in the Waikato Aero Club (Hamilton, New Zealand).
In August 2004, he came to the University of Sydney to commence a PhD in Computer Science with Associate Professor Judy Kay. His candidature was supported by both the university scholarship and a top-up scholarship from the Smart Internet Technology CRC. William's thesis exploits context ontologies in the pervasive computing environment. He submitted his thesis in July 2008.
Now he works in the CHAI group, University of Sydney as a postdoctoral researcher. His research is funded by the Smart Services CRC under the "Multi-channel Content Distribution & Mobile Personalisation" project.
