Sonnet XXIV -- A Valentine

For me to gain my heart would be in vain,
Its prison fled the flight would be too brief.
Once free it must fall captive once again:
New liberty would find it all too lief
At once to bind itself in love to you.
And having done so what then could I gain?
One unrequited love I would eschew
And in the empty place enthrone the same.

What man is there that could retain his heart
And not succumb to your abundant charms?
Love seems already to have made a start
Keen as I am to be within your arms.
Endearing as to dream this seems to me
Reality would suit me to a `T'.
