Prospective international students seeking 6 month internship under Dr
Kalina Yacef's supervision
We have room, each year to welcome a few students from overseas
insitutions seeking internship. However this is decided on a case-by-case
basis. The following instructions and information ONLY apply to projects
under MY supervision. If you are interested to work with other staff, please
contact them directly.
There is no firm rule but here is just some basic information.
Requirements
-
you must be independant and have a strong sense of initiative.
-
you need to demonstrate that you will be able to adapt yourself very quickly
(you will be immersed in a new environment, exposed to a foreign language,
find your accomodation, set yourself up, learn about tutoring work (if
applicable), start working on the project: if this overwhelmes you then
it may not be the right thing for you). I will, naturally, try and help
as much as possible. If you have access to people who have done this in
the past, you should go and speak to them.
-
you must be able to work in teams
-
you will attend our research group's weekly presentations (SITRG
talks)
-
you will be required to provide a report at the end of the internship and
do a presentation of your work in our research group
-
you will meet with me regularly.
How to apply
-
Look up the project list
-
Send me:
-
your resume in english (if you are from a french institution then please
ALSO send the french version). Your resume should give enough details about
your interests and experience (for example explain what you did in previous
internships or work experience)
-
a letter of motivation
-
your transcript showing all the units you took and marks you obtained.
-
the dates you wish to come
-
the financial arrangements you plan to have (parents support, savings,
tutoring work (top-up only) )
-
For visa purposes, contact me at least 2 months in advance.
Financial matters
-
The school does NOT offer financial support other than, sometimes, through
tutoring work (if your profile and english skills are suited to the task)
-
Tutorial work, when the school accepts your candidature for tutoring, does
NOT cover all the living costs of living in Sydney. You must sort out
your financial arrangements yourself.
-
If you want to apply for tutoring work, then you must be present for the
whole duration of a semester plus 2 weeks before the semester starts and
after it finishes, ie mid-February to mid-July, or early-mid July to mid
December as a rule of thumb.
-
To be a tutor you must speak english fluently.
-
An agreement to do an internship does not necessarily mean that tutoring
work is guaranteed. Tutoring work is a separate process and you need to
apply here.
-
Understandably, you may want to know in advance whether our school can
secure you some tutoring work. In this case you need to lodge your tutoring
application. However, in addition to your academic skills, the school
needs to check that your spoken english is sufficient to work as a tutor.
This can be done through a short phone conversation otherwise you will
need to wait until you arrive to get the confirmation of tutoring work.
Visa matters
-
Once we have agreed on a project, I will let you know the procedure for
obtaining a visa (the University will handle the process).
Living in Sydney and general information
