ICT Pioneers and Leaders

Message from the Dean of Science

Professor David Day

In looking to the University of Sydney’s future in researching information and communication technology, we must first acknowledge the important contribution, fifty years ago, of both the School of Physics and the Science Foundation for Physics, in funding and building SILLIAC, the University’s first computer.

With the creation of the computing infrastructure necessary to support ongoing world-class research and, with the establishment of Australia’s first Department of Computer Science, the University’s role as a leader in technology research was assured.

Within this culture the University continues to develop the next generation of ICT researchers to international standards.

We encourage the transfer of that knowledge into the community all the while recognising that these values are similar to those that drove Professor Harry Messel and other pioneers to build SILLIAC.

Dean, Faculty of Science
