  USYD:\n\nService Science: Conceptual Foundations\, Emerging
  Directions\n\nSpeaker:	Joseph G. Davis\n School of Information
Technologies\, The University of Sydney\n\nTime: Friday 6 November
2009\, 4:00-5:00pm\n Refreshments will be available from
3:30pm\n\nLocation: The University of Sydney\, School of IT Building\,
Lecture Theatre (Room 123)\, Level 1\n\nABSTRACT\nWith the service sector
accounting for over 70% of the economic activity and nearly 80% of
employment in most of the developed economies including Australia's\,
service systems have become the focus of considerable research. These are
in essence socio-technical systems in which information technology plays
a central role. I will present the foundations and emerging developments
in the inter-disciplinary field of 'service science' which is concerned
with the design\, value co-creation (between the service providers and
customers)\, delivery\, and evolution of service systems. The
multi-dimensional concept of value in service systems as they relate to
metrics will be discussed. Ongoing research in the Knowledge Discovery
and Management Research Group on service level agreements (SLAs) and
performance modelling of complex service systems will be
presented.\n\nSPEAKER’S BIOGRAPHY\nA/Prof. Joseph Davis is the Director
of the Knowledge Discovery and Management Research Group at the School of
Information Technologies.\n\nHis primary research interests are in the
areas of knowledge management including ontologies\, information
technology-centric service systems\, and data mining. He earned his PhD
at the University of Pittsburgh and has served in the Information Systems
departments at Indiana University Bloomington\, the University of
Auckland\, University of Wollongong and held visiting appointments at
Carnegie Mellon University\, Pittsburgh.\n\nHis research has been
supported by grants from the Australian Research Council\, IBM Research
Labs\, and Carnegie Bosch Institute. He is a senior member of ACM and a
charter member of the Association for Information Systems.\n\n\nLOCATION
