Further study

The University of Sydney is a research intensive university and has a strong track record of technology transfer and commercialisation. Research activities in the School focus on algorithmics and applications, enterprise computing, human-centred computing, and IT applications in health care. If you would like to be part of the University’s research community, you should consider applying for a research degree at the School of IT.

Students completing a research degree undertake supervised research and submit an original written thesis at the completion of their studies.

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a one year full-time program or part-time equivalent (minimum duration). The entry requirement is a high credit average (i.e. 70%) in an honours degree or equivalent, with a research component. The applicant must show evidence of research potential.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a three year full-time program or part-time equivalent (minimum duration). The entry requirements are:

  • A distinction average (i.e. 75%) in an honours equivalent to an Australian Bachelors qualification, with a research component. Mandatory requirement.
  • A high credit average at the undergraduate level (i.e. 70%). Mandatory requirement.
  • Strong evidence of research ability through research projects, preferably related to the proposed research area. Optional requirement.
  • Evidence of research outputs such as publications, products or patents. Optional requirement.
  • Relevant professional experience. Optional requirement.
